ch. 490–513

Wow...uhh...that went about as badly as it possibly could have. What the hell happens from here? Anyways don't have a lot to say about that arc other than the conversation with Silvers Rayleigh was super interesting, that extra context about Gold Roger (Gol D. Roger?) being terminally ill before his execution was fascinating. I love that he turned himself in because he was dying in order to instigate more people to defy the government and become pirates. In his own words "I'm not gonna die..." I love that confirmation about the Roger pirates having learned the history that Robin is after, and also saying that his crew were no scholars like the Ohara archaeologists, but there was some essence of that history they came to understand a different way. I also love Luffy being like "NO DON'T TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT ONE PIECE. I WILL NOT GO ON A BORING ADVENTURE." I thought that was a great moment. But now they've all be whisked away by Kuma to who knows where. What a place to end that arc on.

ch. 514–524

That arc was largely meh, though it wasn't boring at all. I had the most fun with the latter part, it was very cool to see Luffy choosing to help the women turned to stone instead of getting a ship. I already headcanoned Luffy as aro/ace but this just confirms it for me since the love powers don't work on him haha. I'm glad Luffy found out about Ace's execution though, and I'm so, so, so excited to see what the hell unfolds at Impel Down. It was also really cool to see where the other Straw Hats ended up! Also what is up with Luffy's Haki thing?? He just said to stop and they listened! That is very mysterious, but it reminds me of the very beginning when Shanks commanded that sea king to "get lost," so I can't help but think he's got that power too...

I'm gonna continue to give updates as I finish each "arc" according to the wiki

HOLY SHIT THAT ARC WAS SO GOOD! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I CAN SAY ABOUT MOST OF IT LIKE, EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS AMAZING! IT WAS SO COOL TO SEE THE BAROQUE WORKS PEOPLE AND JINBE SEEMS PRETTY COOL TOO. BUGGY IS HILARIOUS AND IT'S COOL TO HAVE HIM AS A PSEUDO-PROTAGONIST FOR A WHILE. I LOVE HOW LUFFY JUST SNUCK IN AND COMPLETELY WREAKED HAVOC ON IMPEL DOWN SO MUCH. BLACKBEARD IS SUCH AN ENIGMA TO ME STILL TOO. HE'S CLEARLY A BAD GUY, BUT I JUST DON'T KNOW HIS MOTIVATIONS. HE'S CLEARLY PLANNING SOMETHING. ALSO IMPEL DOWN IN GENERAL IS SUCH A COOL IDEA, A BIG PRISON THAT IS BASICALLY HELL ON EARTH FOR PRISONERS TO SUFFER ENDLESSLY. I KNOW THERE'S SO MUCH I'M NOT MENTIONING BUT I WAS ENTHUSED THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH, I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH. I HAVE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN MARINEFORD NOW BRB

JY: Yeah I always end up using shift as well, unless I'm screaming a ton of stuff in general. That's the time that it gets unruly and I just hit caps lock

I don't think I have much to say. Rest in peace Whitebeard and Ace. That battle was crazy, and the fact that Blackbeard can apparently steal people's devil fruit abilities (probably just once they're dead) is very very scary, I definitely see him being a potential endgame-level threat. It was awesome to see how much the pirates have fucked up the marines' image, and I love that Shanks seems to be taking Ace and Whitebeard's bodies to be buried, which also takes away the ability for the marine's to claim a victory. Damn Ace's death was really tragic though... This story is something else man... I know I was yelling about how good Impel Down was, and don't think the lack of yelling means I liked this one less, I just feel like I'm stunned into calmness without having a lot to say... I know there's one more arc in this saga that presumably is the aftermath of this... So I'll get back to y'all when I've read that. I may have an announcement to make at that time

ch. 581–597

I was not expecting to get all of that young Luffy and Ace backstory, and Sabo's death was really sad. It was cool to see some more of what the rest of the crew was doing. I liked that a bit ago the covers were used to show us what they were doing, but it's cool to have that fleshed out some more, and to see what they all plan to do for the next two years. I'm most excited about Zoro getting training from Mihawk of all people, and Luffy getting trained in Haki by Rayleigh. The whole crew is going to be a lot stronger when they reunite and that is super exciting! I LOVE how Luffy was able to deliver that message to his crew while again spitting in the World Governments' collective face! The world is really a mess right now though, and I can't imagine the havoc Blackbeard and pirates like him will wreak in that two years. I did know that there would be a time skip at some point in this story before hand, and after reading this stuff that makes a lot of sense. It feels very natural and I can't wait to see the Straw Hats reunite again!!!

I know I'm reading it now so there's a lot of recency bias here, but I feel like One Piece does so many things I love and has so many characters I adore. It's world feels so large and real and alive, and the story it tells is so far incredible, beyond the scope and execution of any(?) other story I've enjoyed
